Everyday Phallicism

an exploration of phallic manmade objects in our everyday lives

The Latin word phallus (from the Greek phallos) and the derived adjective phallic refer to the penis.

Any object that visually resembles a penis or acts as a symbol for it may also be referred to as being “phallic”.

Such symbols often represent cultural implications (such as power, superiority, wealth) that are associated with the male sexual organ.

About the Author

Jeremiah Cohick is a first-semester senior new media major at Emerson College. This project was inspired by a conversation during Jeremiah’s freshman honors course where a classmate made an argument that urinals were phallic. This prompted Jeremiah to search for other examples of conceptual, rather than physical, phallic design in society.
